A Simple and Fair Way to End Gerrymandering
It’s so easy that it will never be done
We live in strange times. Politically, our nation is in terra incognita. If I were going to give Donald Trump and his followers credit for anything, it would be for their ability to find and exploit every loophole there is in the U.S. Constitution.
Most recently, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made the bold decision to redraw the congressional districts in his state to give Republicans the maximum number of seats in the House of Representatives as possible. Legally, there is nothing wrong with doing this. There is nothing prohibiting him from doing it. No court will stop him. No laws will be broken.
However, doing this for the express purpose of gaining seats in Congress in the next election runs afoul of any sense of fair play. It’s cheating without actually cheating. He isn’t technically doing anything wrong.
Technically.
In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom is attempting to redraw the congressional districts in California to fight back and regain the seats lost in Texas. In the time since Newsom made his announcement, several other states have joined in the fray.
